At the May Chapter meeting we had Bob Morgan, Director of Research and Development at Scaled Composites give us a briefing on the things they are doing down in Mojave, CA. One of the projects he presented was the Stratolaunch vehicle that they were building.
Just last week they rolled the aircraft out of the hangar for the first time. Here is an article from Wired Magazine that describes the event.
The aircraft, funded by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, is the largest aircraft ever built. It is designed to carry launch vehicles into the upper atmosphere where they can more easily insert satellites into orbit. The six engines are the same type used on Boeing 747 aircraft.
