Check Out the ACS Approach to Special Emphasis Items

One of the many improvements that the Airman Certification Standards (ACS) brings to training and testing is a better approach to the “special emphasis” items, like LAHSO (Land and Hold Short Operations). As you know, the introduction section in today’s Practical Test Standards (PTS) for airman certificates and ratings includes a lengthy list of these topics. By incorporating each one as a knowledge or risk management item in the appropriate Area of Operation and Task, the ACS connects it to real-world operations and provides context that helps applicants, instructors, and evaluators understand why it is important. To see how it looks, please visit the Airman Testing web page (www.faa.gov/training_testing/testing/) and watch for additional FAAST Blast updates as the FAA prepares to implement the ACS for Private Pilot Airplane and Instrument Airplane Rating in June 2016.
